Skill Development Program

1. Public Speaking/ Oratory Skills:

At St. John’s International School, students begin their public speaking journey in first grade. Each year, every grade performs in a class play and every student has a speaking role. Teachers have creative license to design the play to coincide with a unit they might be working on to further reinforce the lesson. The children learn to work together as a whole and ultimately see their hard work appreciated by their audience: the whole school. Plays have ranged in topic from being kind to the environment, to science fiction, to holiday-themed productions, and they never disappoint to help children improve their public speaking skills. The School is in talks with the Gavel Club of Toastmasters International to help help children reach international stages in public speaking competitions.

2. Leadership Skills:

At St. John’s we believe that a leadership position is a great way to exercise your strengths and explore your interests. We encourage students to ask themselves, “What makes me excited?” Is it volunteering to help others? Serving as the school president? Starting a club? Giving a speech at a function? Whatever it is, establishing themselves as a leader is a great way to explore their interests on a deeper level. Some important leadership skills taught to them are time management, goal-setting, communication, decision-making, advocating for and defending a cause, accountability, and networking which are all key assets to a great leader.
